Come Right In
Cerrar podrá mis ojos la postrera
sombra que me llevare el blanco día.
(The final shadow may close my eyes,
carrying away my white day.)
— Francisco de Quevedo
COME RIGHT IN
At first, at first glance…
Who would have thought that I would,
after all that has passed—
things now as if they had never been—
long for her fingers, her faint smile,
and the language of the many games
that followed our first encounter,
long for her to attend me at the moment of death?
That was the day when she walked in asking for me.
I want to see him as I have never seen him before,
if I may, she said,
in the language of the many games we played.
As you can see, I have come here at last,
to lower his eyelids over the eyes
that he only had for me,
ever since that first gaze of so long ago,
followed by such things that now seem
as if they had never been.
This was when we embarked upon an eternal love
that in truth never came to pass.
Coming here today at last is the least
I can do for him.
Come right in and see what you can do.
